University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (Austria). Formen- und Strukturanalyse (Analysis of Form and Structure). May 26, 2020. Theme with Variations: An Introduction to Mozart’s Sonata KV 331 and Beethoven’s Variations WoO 77
Gastoprofesor, BOHDAN SYROYID SYROYID. Responsible Department of (Institute of Musicology and Interpretation Research staff member: LUKAS HASELBÖCK
This lecture is aimed at introducing music students to the formal concept of “Theme with Variations”.
Two case studies are provided, namely: Sonata in A, KV 331 (1783) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(1756–1791) and Piano Variations in G, WoO 77 (ca. 1800) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827).
Variation is a formal process in which there is a permanent element and an evolving one. In the
common practice period, the element of permanence is harmony. Variations tend to be grounded on the
elaboration upon a repeating harmonic sequence.

This lecture is aimed at introducing music students to the free open-source software Sonic Visualiser1 developed in the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary, University of London. Sonic Visualiser is a powerful tool for analyzing audio recordings, allowing to conduct a deeper musical analysis. Sonic Lineup is another free application that belongs to the Sonic Visualiser family and it facilitates the process of comparing different performances of a single musical piece. The analytical scope of the present lecture is focused on examining the constructive functions of musical silences in a selected corpus of 20th century music. Musical silences are often times relegated to a background and their importance is downplayed. Nonetheless, silences are integral element of music and can manifest a wide range of functions.
